History of NHL Jerseys by Real Sports Jerseys

The National Hockey League has been around for a while, and so have its merchandise. The hockey merchandise is quite varied, whether you’re looking for pucks or hockey sticks. There has also been growing interest in jerseys, and the mere fact that the jerseys themselves have their own history is quite amazing!

There were many hockey teams on the amateur circuit before the NHL came to life. Canadian and U.S. teams from the Michigan area were the first to popularize the sport, and to start wearing professional jerseys. Some of the first hockey teams were the Toronto Maple Leafs (then the Toronto Arenas) who wore a solid blue jersey that was trimmed with white. For the rest of the teams, long sleeved jerseys that were striped up were the norm. As the 20th century progressed, hockey leagues started forming in the U.S., with the Boston Bruins leading the way with their brown and gold uniforms. Black and gold became the Hamilton Tigers, while tiny lines of alternating colors formed the jerseys of teams from Chicago and Detroit. Even New York joined in the fray, and its team wore a red, white, and blue jersey.

Not all was smooth sailing for hockey, however, and soon, teams began to fold. In the 1940’s, left with only six teams, it was quite surprising that colored pants and different home and away uniforms were making their mark. This tradition of having home and away uniforms continued well into the century, as did the bright colors. Soon, NHL teams had orange, green, purple, even sky blue. Some teams took on three-color schemes. As the league became more and more corporate-sponsored, merchandise began carrying logos. This has continued to today, and it can make prices shoot up because of the branding.

As hockey became more popular, the jerseys became more varied. Not only do teams have a home jersey and away jersey, they also have a special occasion or Saturday game jersey. There are even different shapes, designs, patches, and even nameplates. In the new century, professional hockey jerseys have logos on them, with big, bright, radical designs of team mascots.

These are only a few facts about hockey jerseys. As we move forward, we can expect even more new designs and colors, and perhaps earth-friendly jerseys that go with many green initiatives. The sport of hockey itself, of course, will continue to live on and be popular in many countries around the globe.
