Pro football courtesy of the Minneapolis Marines (later Red Jackets) had actually begun in the St. Paul Area in the 1920s but it wasn’t until 1959 when a pro football team actually re-emerged. After a franchise was awarded, the Minnesota Vikings were founded in 1961. The Vikings got their nickname courtesy of their general manager, Bert Rose. He suggested the name to the Board of Directors for its association to aggression and willfulness. It was also a nod to the Nordic influence in the Midwest’s northern regions. Today, the Vikings are considered as one of NFL’s most successful franchises. They have won the NFL championship in 1969, has 4 Conference championship titles and 18 Division championships.
The Vikings play their home games in Minneapolis, Minnesota, a city with an economy based on finance, commerce, transportation and health care. The city also enjoys an abundance in water resources, thanks to its proximity to many creeks, waterfalls and rivers.
