The Houston Texans was established in 2002 as a National Football League expansion team. They replaced the Houston Oilers after the team relocated to Nashville, Tennessee. Although the process to found the team took a few years to complete, they still didn't have a nickname by 2000. That year, however, 6 names were included in the least, including Texans, Apollos and Stallions. In the end, 'Texans' was chosen as a nod to one of the franchises of the World Football League, which later on became the Shreveport Steamer. The team's first game was played against the Dallas Cowboys in September 2002. Fans were treated to a pleasant surprise when the new franchise scored 19 to the Cowboys' 10.
