N.O. went pro with the awarding of a franchise on November 1st, 1966, which was All Saints’ Day. The nickname was a top choice with fans for a contest to name the team and was chosen by John Mecom, the team owner. It was taken from a line from ‘When the Saints Go Marching In’ and was also selected to honor the jazz heritage of the city. In 1967, the New Orleans Saints was established. Although it took a while for the Saints to record a winning season, they finally gathered enough steam to begin showing their muscle. They have since won 1 Conference championship, 4 Division championships and the Super Bowl championship in 2009. They have appeared at the playoffs 7 times.
The historic city of New Orleans is the Saints’ home turf. The French influence is prevalent in the city, which was named in honor of Philippe, Duke of Orleans. The architecture in the city is distinctly French Creole, along with its local culture, including its music and cuisine. Due to its proximity to the Mississippi River, New Orleans also has many protected natural resources, including the Bayou Sauvage National Wildlife Refuge, the New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park and the Jean Lafitte National Historical Reserve. New Orleans is also a natural tourist magnet. People come to see the city’s most popular spots, including the French Quarter, Bourbon Street, St. Charles Avenue, Magazine Street, Pontchartrain Hotel, and its various Catholic cemeteries. Music also brings people to New Orleans, particularly during Jazz Fest. And of course, the year wouldn’t be complete without everyone’s favorite festival, Mardi Gras.
