The team we now know and love as the Oakland Raiders were first christened with the nickname 'Señors'. The team got their name in 1960 from a winning entry in a name-the-team contest sponsored by their then general manager. The name was derided by fans and sports observers alike, with one sports writer even complaining that they couldn't print the accent mark over the n for the headlines. Team management later relented and chose the name 'Raiders', one of the finalists in the naming contest. The team later changed their name to the Los Angeles Raiders after moving to L.A. Relocating back to Oakland, the team regained its old name. The Raiders have won 3 Super Bowl Championships, 1 AFL Championship, 4 Conference championships and 15 Division championships. They have appeared in the playoffs 21 times.
The Raiders play their home games in Oakland, one of the largest cities in California. Oakland is famous for its many tourist spots and beautiful locales, including Chinatown, Joaquin Miller Park, Morcom Rose Garden, the Oakland Zoo, Peralta Hacienda Historical Park, Redwood Regional Park, Huckleberry Botanic Regional Preserve, the Civic Center and City Center, Jack London District and Lakeside Apartments District. It is also home to Lake Merritt -- the lake and the district. Some of its most notable buildings include the Tribune Tower, the J. Mora Moss House and the Cathedral of Christ the Light, among others.
