The Miami Dolphins was established in 1966 as an expansion team for the American Football League. The year before, a naming contest was promoted to give the new team their nickname. The winning entry, with over 600 submissions was 'Dolphins' and the team was finally christened. A fan was granted lifetime passes after correctly predicting the winning name and score of the game between University of Miami and Notre Dame. The team has earned two Super Bowl Championships, getting to the top spot for two consecutive years starting in 1972. They have also won 5 AFC championships, 13 AFC division championships and has appeared 22 times in the playoffs.
The Dolphins play their home games in Miami's metropolitan area, specifically in the Miami Gardens' Sun Life Stadium. The suburban city is home to the the huge Antioch Mission Baptist Church of Carol City. The city is also known for its music, a combination of Cuban, Colombian, Carribean, West Indian and Dominican flavors.
