The Indianapolis Colts were originally established in 1953 in Baltimore, Maryland. Their history, however, goes to as far back as 1913. After several changes, the team became the Baltimore Colts. The team got their nickname as a nod to the horse breeding history of the region. In 1984, they were christened their current team nickname after moving to Indianapolis. The Colts won the 1958, 1959 and 1968 NFL Championships and the 1971 Super Bowl while still playing for Baltimore. They have since won the 2007 Super Bowl XLI and hold the record for winning at least 12 games in 7 consecutive seasons. They have appeared 23 times in the playoffs.
The Colts' stomping grounds is Indianapolis, Indiana. Originally a manufacturing hub, Indy is now a center for health care, finance, education and tourism. The city is known for its love of sports. In fact, some of the major sports events held here are the NCAA Basketball Tournaments, the Brickyard 400 and the Indianapolis 500. The city is also known for its rich culture. Some of its most notable structures are the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument, the War Memorial, the Chase Tower and the USS Indianapolis Memorial. It is also home to the James Whitcomb Riley Museum, Crown Hill Cemetery, Obelisk Square, the City Market and the Lockerbie Square. The city also likes to celebrate, hosting several important events and festivals, including the Indy Jazz Fest, DCI World Championships and the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis.
