The Arizona Cardinals was actually founded in 1898 in Chicago as the Morgan Athletic Club. The team underwent several name changes from there along with relocations to Chicago, St. Louis and Phoenix before finally settling in Arizona in 1988. The team’s nickname was inspired by their early uniforms, which was purchased used. The color, which was faded maroon, was christened ‘cardinal red’ by Chris O’Brien, the team’s owner. The cardinal bird logo was later adapted in 1947 and used on the team’s helmets by 1960. The cardinals have since won 1 Conference championship, 6 Division championships and 2 League championships. They have appeared in the playoffs 8 times.
The Cardinals play their home games in the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, the city that’s affectionately known as ‘Arizona’s Antique Capital’. It also plays host to many annual events such as Glendale Glitters, the Annual Jazz and Blues Festival and the Chocolate Festival. The famous Arrowhead Towne Center can also be found here, along with the Midwestern University. The Cardinals’ home, University of Phoenix Stadium, is one of the most recognizable landmarks in the city and was actually designed by famous architect Peter Eisenman. The structure is recognized for its innovative features and was actually included on the History Channel’s Modern Marvels series.
