The Denver Broncos began as a team playing for the American Football League in 1960. They later joined the NFL after the AFL merger with the National Football League. The Broncos were founded in 1959 and won the first AFL game against the Boston Patriots the next year. Seven years later, they defeated the Detroit Lions, becoming the first AFC member to win against an NFL team. The Broncos received their team name after a winning entry submitted by a fan. Although their first years as a new franchise were tough, they later overcame their troubles and showed their true form. The Broncos have 6 AFC championships and won the Super Bowl Championship two years in a row starting in 1997. They have appeared in the playoffs 20 times.
The Broncos' home turf is Denver, Colorado, a county and city known for its stunning scenery. Denver was once one of the more famous mining towns in the U.S., thanks to the Pikes Peak gold rush. Today, Denver is home to more than 200 beautiful parks, some of which, like the 314-acre City Park, provide a welcome respite and recreation area for its residents and visitors. It is also home to nearly 15,000 acres of scenic mountain parks, the most famous of which is Red Rocks, where the equally famous and eponymous Amphitheatre is located. Also a favorite among tourists are the Winter Park Resort, the Denver Urban Gardens and the Bluff Lake Nature Center.
