The Buffalo Bills began to play competitively as one of the charter members of the American Football Conference in 1960. With AFC, the team won their first title in 1964 and successfully defended it in 1965. They have also won 4 AFC championships consecutively. When the AFL merged with the National Football League, the team remained active. They hold the distinction of being the only NFL team to compete in 4 Super Bowl games -- consecutively. The Bills took their name from an eponymous football franchise that played for the All-American Football Conference. This team was in turn named after 'Buffalo Bill' William Frederick Cody. They play home games in New York state, the NFL team to do so.
