The San Francisco 49ers was founded in 1946 as one of the charter members of the All-America Football Conference. They later joined the NFL in 1950, becoming the first franchise of the league to secure 5 championships in the Super Bowl. The team received their nickname from the term used to call gold prospectors who came to San Francisco and other areas in Northern California to look for gold around 1849. The folks who came to California during the Gold Rush were known as the 49ers. The team holds the distinction of being one of the pro football teams to participate in the Super Bowl and never lose a game. To date, the 49ers have won 17 Division championships and 5 Conference championships. They have also appeared in the playoffs 23 times.
