The North Carolina State University is represented by the NC State Wolfpack. The squad is made up of 24 intercollegiate varsity teams who play in the Division I of the NCAA and in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The team earned their nickname in 1922 when a fan remarked that students' behavior during sports events were similar to those of a wolf pack. Before this moniker, however, the team was known by several nicknames, including the Red Terrors and the Techs. The Wolfpack is accompanied to every event by a pair of mascots, Mr. & Ms. Wuf. The Wolfpack plays in a variety of NCAA sports events, including basketball, baseball, football, tennis and women's soccer.
