The Maryland Terrapins are the University of Maryland's representatives to the NCAA Division I and the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Terrapins or Terps are made up of 27 varsity teams. The Terps were once known as the Old Liners but the name was later changed to their current moniker in honor of the diamondback terrapins that are found in the region surrounding Chesapeake Bay. The Terps have won 37 national championships participating in the NCAA, AIAW, NCA and USILA. The team's mascot is Testudo, a terrapin who proudly wears the school's athletic colors.
