Learn More About The Hornets:
If you were around for the basketball of the early years, then you might not have been wearing New Orleans Hornets jerseys. The New Orleans Hornets actually hail originally from Charlotte, North Carolina, as the Charlotte Hornets, who began to play in 1988. There, they played in the Charlotte Coliseum. Their name comes from the city's resistance during the Revolutionary War, where a British commander called Charlotte a "veritable nest of hornets." Their first colors, purple and teal, started off a fashion craze in the 1990's. They were also the first to use and popularize pinstripe uniforms.
The Hornets made their home in Charlotte for 14 seasons, but then moved to New Orleans and became the New Orleans Hornets. They were in their home base for only three seasons when Hurricane Katrina swept through and pushed the franchise over to Oklahoma City, where they played as the New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets for two seasons. The Hornets returned to New Orleans in 2007. Today, the New Orleans Hornets play in the NBA's Western Conference, under its Southwest Division.
